ご朱印

Goshuin (ご朱印) is a stamp ‘received’ by visitors to Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines in Japan. Technically, you do not buy the stamps but rather the (usually) 300 Yen you give is treated as a donation.

Goshuincho (ご朱印長) is the special notebook where the temple/shrine stamps are placed. These can be purchased (usually 1000 – 2000 Yen) on most large temples and shrines in Japan. It can also be bought online but the site is in Japanese. Aside from the pressed stamp (or stamps), the temple/shrine’s name and current date is also written in Japanese calligraphy by the people from the temple/shrine.

I learned about this while I was researching for 2015’s Japan summer trip. I thought it would be a more meaningful souvenir from all my visits to Japan.

I bought mine at Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka.
