January 25

7:34 am – Got up
I got up a bit later than what I had previously intended.

8:42 am – Off we go
I decided to give it another go since I now have a complete map (bought the separate ones yesterday; it’s mostly in Japanese with a few English here and there) and I sort of have a head start because I already know the first few points. Besides, I was really determined to do this.

8:52 am – Bus stop
P_20160125_085220
Had I just gotten up earlier, I probably would have seen some snow. Here are some remnants of the snow probably from last night or early that morning.

9:37 am – 東山 Trail board #1

10:13 am – Just before #3-1

I got lucky this time around. A Japanese man asked me if I was doing the Kyoto trail. I said yes. He told me he can accompany me until #11. Awesome!

11:04 am – 東山 Trail board #10
P_20160125_110421
I missed #9-2 as おじいさん showed a shortcut to #10. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining.

11:05 am – 東山 Trail board #11
P_20160125_110544
おじいさん and I parted ways at this point. I’m very thankful for the company, speaking practice and for not getting lost in the residential areas.

11:19 am – 東山 Trail board #12
P_20160125_111953
This is the first marker in the many forested areas. This is also where I took my first break.

A 50-step stair climb separated these two.

11:56 am – 東山 Trail board #17
P_20160125_115657
This is located at the base of Mt. Kiyomizu. I struggled a bit on which way to go after #17. There looked like two paths but the other one led to a dead end. I even double checked it. I stubbornly went to the wrong path twice. Unconsciously I probably didn’t want to go through the other path because it looked like it was a steep climb.

Somewhere between #24 and #25 I met Bayo, a Californian on holiday who just happened to come by one of the trail boards and decided to follow them. Actually he was just about to stop and look for something else to do when we met. His interest returned when I told him about the trail.

We took a break and ate something after #32 because we saw the uphill climb towards #33-1.

2:27 pm – 東山 Trail board #33-1
P_20160125_142718
This is a part of the trail that has some sort of loop. If we followed the path to #33-2, we would see #33-3 and then go straight to #38. The other path would go through #34, #35, #36, #37 and #38.

6:08 pm – 東山 Trail board #52-1
P_20160125_180804_LL
I decided to call it a day after this.

7:54 pm – Home sweet home
I would have been back sooner had google maps not given me wrong directions. I was supposed to take two buses from #52-1. Google was indicating an ‘invisible’ bus stop. I had to ask someone on a bike waiting to cross the street. The actual bus stop was on the diagonal side of the intersection. The second bus stop was another ‘invisible’ one. What’s worse is that the shown path on the map was on the wrong side of the street. Of course at first I didn’t know that. I only realized it once I zoomed out and remembered that the bus back would have to travel east through route 1.
